We are all lucky

“We are all lucky, because we have been born into a free society”- Richard Branson.

It is easy to get down when the daily grind of our lives begins to take a physical and mental toll on us.  Whether it is our job, our family or our finances, there are always things that can improve and as humans we feel unhappy that things are not going the way we want.

It helps to remember that even our worst day would be someone else’s best day in another part of the world.  No matter how bad your day was, you are probably going home to full refrigerator in a climate-controlled home with unlimited access to the internet and probably at least one television.  The entire knowledge of humanity is in our pockets on our phones and Wikipedia is free!

We may be mentally or even physically tired, but we live in a society of law and order, where we don’t usually have to worry about our safety and the safety of our loved ones.  If we need help, we can call, and emergency services will come very quickly.

We live in a time with the longest longevity in history and the lowest infant mortality. We are more likely to be killed by a cow than by terrorism.  Very few of us has served in the armed forces and there has not been a major war for many decades.

Compare this to the lives of our grandparents:  many of them came from countries with extreme poverty, no indoor plumbing, very little food, no jobs and their country was probably recovering from World War 2!

And let’s think about the luck that it took for us just to be born; scientists think that the odds of us being born are 400 trillion to one, and you have already beaten that!

When you are feeling like you are having a tough day or even week, think about how lucky we are to be born and living where we live today.
