Too Much Sun Can Make a Desert

When you talk to people about their ideal life, they will frequently say that if they could retire and not worry about money that they would live on a beach and drink pina coladas all day long.  It certainly sounds interesting in theory, being on the beach, having fun and worries.  And we also know that most people are not actually serious about spending the rest of their lives lying on a beach when they give it serious thought.

The reason is because most people notice fairly quickly, usually within hours of being on the beach, that they get kind of bored of just lying there and want to get up do something.  Even if they are able to spend several days lying on the beach, they will eventually feel the need to do something.

At a minimum they will want to go for a walk and talk to people.  That is the reason that vacation resorts will have activities for their guests to do, they want them to enjoy themselves and not be bored.  People will do activities they have not done for many years, like snorkeling, playing tennis and even mini golf to pass the time.

We are social and active beings and too much of one thing can be detrimental.  Another way to look at it is that too much sunshine actually creates deserts.  We need adversity, we need water for life and rain to irrigate crops.  Rain also nurtures and cleans, both important things we need.  We also need different seasons to break up the psychological monotony of life AND for our physical health.

So, while it’s interesting and pleasant to think about having sunshine all the time we probably also want to think about having other things in our lives that are different and that can be nurturing like water and rain.
